AFC Wimbledon v York City: Wilcox plans to build on midweek victory

You wait ages for one and then two – or, as was the case on Tuesday night, three – turn up almost at the same time.

The win over Cambridge United in midweek saw Russ Wilcox’s men score three times inside 12 minutes, a remarkable turn of events considering it had been the best part of four hours since York had last found the net in the Valentine’s Day win over Tranmere Rovers.

The key now, of course, is building on that hugely heartening 3-0 win at the Abbey Stadium as the relegation-threatened Minstermen look to move away from trouble near the bottom of the Football League.

“It was pretty much the perfect performance,” said Wilcox about Cambridge ahead of today’s trip to London to take on AFC Wimbledon.

“But we are not going to get carried away though after moving up a couple of places because we know where we are in the league table and there is a lot of work still to do.”

York’s win at Cambridge moved Wilcox’s men up two places in the league to 20th.

More importantly, it extended the gap between themselves and the final relegation place to two points.

Today will be the fourth meeting between these two sides this season and City are yet to experience the taste of victory.

Instead, the Dons won 3-2 at Bootham Crescent in the league fixture earlier this season and also triumphed 3-1 in an FA Cup first-round replay after the first tie in Yorkshire had been drawn 1-1.

Defender Dave Winfield is ineligible for the home side under the terms of his present loan switch from the Minstermen.
