The Minstermen fell behind to two first-half goals from Anton Forrester and Nathan Cameron and left themselves with too much to do during a more encouraging second period.

Substitute Michael Coulson reduced the deficit with his first goal in more than a year but the visitors could not get a second, which would have seen Nigel Worthington’s men equal a club record of six consecutive draws.

York fell behind after just 38 seconds following a raid down the right by on-loan Rotherham striker Danny Nardiello.

His cross picked out Forrester three yards out and the on-loan Blackburn teenager claimed his seventh goal of the season with a simple tap-in.

The hosts then doubled their advantage on 18 minutes when York keeper Aaron McCarey failed to hold on to a weak Nardiello header and Cameron followed up to stab the ball into an empty net from three yards.

Nardiello should have added a third soon after but missed the target from close range with the goal at his mercy following Forrester’s cross.

At the other end, all York could muster during the opening 45 minutes were a couple of Lanre Oyebanjo efforts – one that produced Brian Jensen’s only save of the half.

The Minstermen improved after the break with Coulson netting at the far post on 73 minutes after fellow replacement Ryan Jarvis had scuffed a 10-yard attempt.

It was the Shakers, though, who went closest to adding another goal after substitute Shaun Harrad poked a 90th-minute chance wide with only McCarey to beat.

Bury: Jensen; Hinds, Cameron, Howell; Sedgwick, Procter, Miller, Mayor (Grimes, 55), Roberts (Harrison, 74); Nardiello, Forrester (Harrad, 87). Unused substitutes: Holden, Charles-Cook, Walker.

Last-placed Northampton drew 0-0 at Portsmouth to edge three points away from safety. Jonathan Franks hit an injury-time winner as Hartlepool beat Morecambe 2-1. Jack Sampson had equalised on 87 minutes after Jack Baldwin scored first.

Mansfield were 2-1 winners at Cheltenham with Anthony Howell and Matt Rhead on target. Sido Jombati grabbed an 86th-minute consolation for the hosts.
