Cresswell to battle for cause before return

NIGEL WORTHINGTON has hailed Richard Cresswell’s contribution to York City’s survival bid amid suggestions from Sheffield United that the striker could be recalled.

The 35-year-old moved to Bootham Crescent shortly before the transfer deadline in a loan deal that included a recall option once he had been at the League Two club for a month. That will be triggered once today’s trip to Northampton Town is out of the way.

York are desperate to hold on to Cresswell, who has netted twice in a four-game run that has yielded five points.

However, new Blades manager Chris Morgan, who succeeded Danny Wilson earlier this week, has hinted that the vastly experienced striker could be needed for the south Yorkshire club’s promotion push.

Morgan told the Yorkshire Post: “I have thought about bringing Cressy back and have spoken to him. He has a duty to York until the 16th, so we could possibly have him back with us Tuesday.

“He is someone I have known since 14. He is very similar to myself. When you are in a position like I have found myself in, the more people you can have around you that you can trust helps because we all need to be working to the same agenda.”

Asked about Cresswell’s future ahead of today’s trip to promotion-chasing Northampton, York chief Worthington said: “Richard is here until next week and we will address the situation then. He has been outstanding since coming to the club and a credit to both himself and Sheffield United.”

A far more pressing matter for York is the need to extend a three-game unbeaten run and move out of the bottom two.

Worthington said: “The mood has been good. We were disappointed immediately after the Accrington game at conceding a late goal, of course we were. But it was still a point gained and continued our run of good performances.

“We created a lot of chances and need to keep that going. The lads know what needs to be done and, as I say, there is a good mood in the camp along with a lively spirit. We appreciate it will be tough at Northampton but we travel with confidence.”
