Exeter City 1 York City 1: Unhappy return for Minstermen’s Ingham

YORK City have now drawn all four of their opening League Two fixtures despite a “less than average” performance at Exeter.

That was manager Nigel Worthington’s assessment as his team shared the spoils yet again when Keith Lowe’s 82nd-minute equaliser cancelled out David Wheeler’s early goal for the Grecians.

Recalled shot-stopper Michael Ingham, making his first start for the Minstermen since January, was at fault for Wheeler’s effort, having horribly misjudged a cross by former Southampton midfielder Matt Oakley.

Offering his view on another point earned, Worthington said: “It took us a while to respond to going behind because people weren’t doing what they should have been doing.

“Our performances have been excellent this season but we were hit and miss here. A point away from home is never a bad result, though, and I am happy to get a draw from a game in which we were less than average.”

Wheeler headed into an unguarded net from 10 yards on eight minutes after Ingham had been lured off his line to try and collect Oakley’s centre but got nowhere near the ball.

The visitors were the better side, however, after the break and, incredibly, centre-back Lowe could have claimed four goals for himself after getting on the end of four corners from Luke Summerfield.

His third attempt eventually beat Christy Pym from three yards, while his last came in the game’s final throes and was saved.
