Exeter City v York City: Fletcher return bonus for the Minstermen

Tranmere Rovers, newly-relegated, were first up for the Minstermen, but it was the sheer number of tough-looking games that caught his eye.

No wonder, with the opening nine games of 2014-15 including two clashes with teams who were in League One last season and two who went close to winning promotion by qualifying for the play-offs.

Throw in promoted duo Luton Town and Cambridge United and it is clear just how much of a test those opening couple of months were likely to be for York.

Worthington, whose side are unbeaten after three draws, said: “If you look at our first 10 games, there are some tough fixtures in there. There is never an easy game in League Two, we know that. But there are certainly some fixtures which I would say are good ones and the sort where we will have to be on top of our game.”

York suffered a frustrating first week with all three games seeing points lost courtesy of stoppage-time goals either side of a League Cup exit against Doncaster that also came at the death.

One bright spot, however, to emerge from that opening trio of games was the return of Wes Fletcher after five months out due to suffering knee ligament and cartilage damage.

The striker came off the bench in the final quarter of the 1-1 draw with Northampton and then did the same in Tuesday’s 2-2 stalemate against Cambridge, scoring the equaliser from the spot. Worthington said: “It is nice to have Wes back. You could see in his first game back that he has a touch and a certain feel for the ball but we have to be sensible as he has missed a lot of football.”
