Football: Five things we learned from the weekend’s Yorkshire football action

1. Rotherham can survive.

They may have had a big helping hand from Matthew Connolly, but Rotherham finally broke their winless start to the season on Saturday, overcoming 10-man Cardiff City 2-1 thanks to the defender’s stoppage-time own-goal.

Cardiff, who had goalkeeper David Marshall dismissed, remain one of the division’s leading contenders for a play-off berth but the Millers proved they could hang with the best this weekend, bouncing back from the disappointment of losing their lead on the stroke of half-time to seal the win.

Though they remain at the foot of the table, manager Steve Evans will have breathed a huge sigh of relief when the final whistle came as his side climbed to within two points of safety with all of their fellow bottom-five sides losing.

2. Emyr Huws could be a shrewd signing for Huddersfield.

After falling behind to an early goal, midfielder Huws netted twice to inspire a fine 4-1 win for Town over Bolton on Saturday.

Wigan loanee Huws, 21, has begun to show why he was held in such high regard by Manchester City in his younger years of late.

With three goals in three games, the four-time Welsh international is seen as the replacement for departed play-maker Jacob Butterfield as the Terriers look to move up the table.

3. In a week of turmoil, Leeds fans remain as passionate as ever.

After a turgid performance in the 1-0 home reverse against Ipswich on Tuesday and the shock departure of Adam Pearson, fans could have been forgiven for declining the offer of a trip to Milton Keynes, but the 7,000 travelling fans who packed out the away and, and home end, at stadium:mk proved otherwise.

A 2-0 half time advantage led to a party atmosphere at the interval before Karl Robinson’s men roared back; Simon Church’s 74th-minute goal setting up a tense final quarter.

But Leeds held out, just, and now sit only one point adrift of the top six.

4. Sheffield United are launching a quiet assault on League One’s play-off places.

With 10 points separating leaders Burton and the bottom four, League One is as open as ever but the Blades, after an indifferent start, still sit seventh in the table.

After successive losses, a 2-0 deficit at Bradford was swallowed up by James Meredith’s own goal before Billy Sharp struck to steal a point from Valley Parade.

Nigel Adkins has endured a tough start to life in the Bramall Lane hot seat, but his side remain on course for a shot at earning a long-awaited return to the Championship.

5. York are on the up.

A disappointing start to the year has been tempered in recent weeks as Russ Wilcox’s men have built up a three-game unbeaten streak.

Despite only picking up a 2-2 draw at home against Carlisle on Saturday, after a 3-0 win at Newport before a 2-2 draw on the road against Teddy Sheringham’s Stevenage, it was arguably their most promising performance yet.

The Cumbrians, who have been riding the crest of a wave since conquering QPR in the League Cup at Loftus Road a month ago, raced into a 2-0 lead before York’s Vadaine Oliver was dismissed.

But the 10 men of York battled manfully in the second period and Luke Summerfield’s penalty laid the platform for Josh Carson’s equaliser.

The Minstermen will be looking to extend their run when they travel to to struggling Notts County on Saturday.
