It was only York’s second win of the season and helps them move away from the League Two relegation zone.

Diego De Giralomo scored his third goal of a loan spell from Sheffield United, two minutes before the break as the Minstermen claimed a much-needed three points.

Wilcox said: “It’s important as a new manager to get off the mark. We were so close at Morecambe the other Tuesday so to see this one out is very pleasing.

“It was certainly a game of two halves, similar to most games I’ve been involved in at York.

“We dominated the first half and could have should have been out of sight.

“We had that little bit of luck today we’ve not had in previous games.”
