York moved nine points clear of the League Two relegation zone by beating fellow strugglers Hartlepool in a massive game at the bottom.
Russ Wilcox’s side had Dave Winfield sent off with the score goalless in the first half.
But Luke Summerfield struck with a fierec 30-yard shot midway through the second half to seal the three points for York, who are now five unbeaten and almost safe.
Wilcox said: “It’s an amazing win. It’s bigger than great because of the character.
“The performance was probably the best since I’ve been in charge as a manager at any club.
“Character, togetherness, organisation, a fully-committed display backed by outstanding fans. A great day again for York City. I’m just so delighted.”
