Fyfield leaves it late to seal Minstermen’s win

JAMAL Fyfield’s stoppage-time goal gave York City a thrilling victory at Blue Square Bet Premier play-off rivals Grimsby Town,

Goals from Jamie Reed and Chris Smith had put York in the ascendancy but Grimsby fought back with headers from Anthony Elding and Michael Coulson only for left-back Fyfield to snatch a deserved victory at the finish.

Former Leeds United striker Elding called York goalkeeper Michael Ingham into action twice during the opening stages but it was the Minstermen who forged ahead on 19 minutes with Reed’s 11th goal of the season.

He capitalised on an error by Conor Townsend to shoot past goalkeeper James McKeown from eight yards. York should have doubled their lead with Paddy McLaughlin shooting straight at McKeown when clear on goal and then lifting another shot over from the rebound.

The Minstermen got their second goal of the game two minutes into the second half when Smith forced the ball over the line after McKeown had saved James Meredith’s header.

Jason Walker squandered a great opportunity to grab a third on 57 minutes when he fired wide with the goal begging and the Mariners took advantage to draw level.

First, Elding headed in Winn’s cross on 74 minutes.

Then, seven minutes later, Coulson headed home from another left-wing centre – this time by Townsend – that Ingham failed to deal with. But Fyfield had the last word, driving in from the edge of the box to earn the visitors maximum points.
