Jarvis needs support on scoring front

league two: York City manager Nigel Worthington has called on his side to be more ruthless ahead of this afternoon’s home encounter with AFC Wimbledon.

The Minstermen’s sole win of the season arrived on the opening day against Northampton Town, with Ryan Jarvis – who hit the last-gasp winner against the Cobblers on August 3 – York’s only scorer this campaign with four goals.

Worthington, whose side have not won in five matches since, has been pleased with many aspects of his team’s play, but wants his side to sharpen up in the finishing department and in defence.

He said: “A lot of good things have happened. But at the moment the little mistakes are costing us heavily and we have got to tidy up at both ends.

“We have got to be more ruthless in the opposition box because we are getting the ball in there and getting opportunities.

“We are grateful for Ryan’s scoring continuing. But it’s always good when you have got other people joining in throughout the team. I never stick it on one position for my teams to score goals, we want everyone joining in, scoring goals and keeping clean sheets when we can.”

Wes Fletcher and Richard Cresswell are still on the sidelines, with Worthington hopeful Finnish winger Sander Puri might be okay to feature after training this week – and happy his side were able to put their feet up in midweek.

He added: “We didn’t want a midweek game after two very long midweek journeys and hard games. We’ve had a good week’s training and will be well prepared for Saturday.

“As always, it will be a battle against Wimbledon. We will have to match them because they are a physical side and then do what we need to do.”
