Gary Mills was in charge the last time the Minstermen won, with the long winless run contributing to his sacking and being replaced by former Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington.

And Worthington was celebrating his first win as manager on Easter Monday as the Minstermen defeated fellow strugglers Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at Bootham Crescent.

Ashley Chambers and Richard Cresswell scored the goals in a 10-minute period before half-time.

York stay in the relegation zone but are now only one point from safety with four games remaining.

Bradford City earned a 3-1 win on their trip to York’s relegation rivals Torquay United.

Rory McArdle, Gary Thompson and James Hanson scored for Phil Parkinson’s side at Plainmoor.

The Bantams move up to ninth and are five points off the League Two play-offs.

Promotion-chasing Rotherham United were beaten 1-0 by leaders Gillingham, the former Millers’ striker Deon Burton with the only goal for the Gills.

Steve Evans’s side are sixth, four points adrift of the top three.

Evans said: “In terms of effort, commitment and passion in the second half, that’s as good as we can give.”
