The Minstermen were beaten 3-2 at Leyton Orient with Vadaine Oliver’s brace counting for little as Jay Simpson (2) and Mathieu Baudry secured maximum points.

It is a result that means losses at Portsmouth on Tuesday night and against Accrington next weekend would see new boss Jackie McNamara’s team take their place in the Bootham Crescent history books alongside struggling teams managed by Wilf McGuinness in 1976 and Tom Lockie during 1963.

McNamara was once again left lamenting poor defensive mistakes at Brisbane Road with the Minstermen having now gone 14 league matches without a clean sheet.

He said: “Those careless individual errors didn’t give us a chance and I’m angry because there’s not been a great deal in all the games since I’ve been here.”

Jack Payne hit the bar after only 19 seconds for the hosts before Baudry rose higher than George Swan to head in John Marquis’s 20th-minute corner.

In first-half stoppage time, Marquis then strode through the left channel far too easily before crossing for Simpson to tap in.

There was still time for Oliver to reply before the break with a deflected 20-yard drive but Simpson netted again on 64 minutes when he held off Eddie Nolan’s challenge before driving in from 15 yards.

Oliver was then thwarted by an excellent Alex Cisak save before heading in his eighth goal of the season on 86 minutes.
