Peterborough were on course to replace Town in second place after a 4-1 thumping of Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, but Clarke fired home from 18 yards to snatch all three points for Lee Clark’s side. The heavy defeat for the Owls means their three-month search for a home league win goes on.

York City are now just one place outside the Blue Square Bet Premier play-offs after a 2-1 victory over Mansfield.

In the Championship, Preston thrashed relegation rivals Scunthorpe while Burnley drew with Coventry.

And Manchester United are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating Marseille 2-1.
