Mills aiming to close gap on big-spenders

GARY MILLS admits the impressive start to life in the Football League made by Fleetwood Town, the team York City joined in winning promotion last term, has not come as a surprise.

The Lancashire club sit third in the League Two table after losing just two of their opening nine games.

Such an impressive start makes Fleetwood extremely dangerous opponents at Bootham Crescent tonight but Mills is adamant his side, fresh from Saturday’s impressive win at Aldershot Town, can prevail.

He said: “Fleetwood’s start to the season hasn’t surprised me at all.

“They are a club looking to move forward, very much like Crawley did when they came into the League.

“They have thrown a lot of money at it and are reaping the rewards.

“Having said that, if we can beat them in the first of two home games we have this week then we will be only a point behind.”

Fleetwood went up as champions last term with York following in the play-offs.

Mills added “We have found the standard better this season than the Conference. I’d say it is like playing the better Conference sides every week now we are in League Two.

“There are quite a few teams in the Conference who you should beat but that isn’t the case now.”

York will not risk Scott Kerr tonight with the midfielder instead continuing his recovery from injury with an outing tomorrow for the reserves against Newcastle United.

Lanre Oyebanjo may also miss out tonight with Mills rating the defender as being “50-50” to recover from a thigh strain in time.
