Mills refusing to panic after York pitch in with polished performance

GARY MILLS has pledged that York City will continue with their patient passing style in their pursuit of League Two safety – whatever surface they play on.

The Minstermen were denied a deserved first win in 10 matches – and just their second in 2013 – by Daniel Nardiello’s stoppage-time leveller in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at promotion-chasing Rotherham United.

Despite York’s accomplished efforts from the first whistle at the New York Stadium, the fact remains they are now just four points above the drop zone, with Accrington Stanley jumping out of the second relegation position by virtue of a 3-0 victory at Rochdale.

But Mills is refusing to panic and took plenty of solace in his side’s polished performance, confident they will reap enough points between now and the end of April to secure their Football League tenure

Mills, whose 17th-placed side host Bradford City on Saturday, said: “We have got to play our game. Sometimes, when you are having a bad time, it is easy to bang the ball forward and hope you get the rewards.

“But we cannot do that; we do not play that way.

“Our approach worked well at Rotherham on a good pitch. It shows the difference, when you have got a good pitch, how we can play.

“It was a lovely pitch to play on at Rotherham and I wish we had that every week.

“Football is about winning and we have not won enough. But I do not want anybody at the club to be down and we can take a lot of heart from the performance at Rotherham.

“I know if we play like that, we will get the points we need to make sure we play in the division next season.”

Mills, whose side have now drawn 16 matches this term and have not won since New Year’s Day, added: “It was a draw away from home again and maybe we would have taken that before we went there. But I thought we were different class to Rotherham. I didn’t think they could live with us, right from the off.

“It was an excellent performance, simple as that, and we did not get what we deserved.

“But if we perform like that, the win has got to come.”
