Newport 3 York City 0: Worthington rues goals which ended York’s run

YORK City manager Nigel Worthington lamented his side’s defending after this defeat at Newport County.

The Minstermen went down to goals from Chris Zebrowski, Lee Minshull and Danny Crow in a South Wales encounter that Worthington reckoned brought his team back down to earth.

York went into the match having taken seven points from a possible nine during their previous three League Two contests but struggled to respond once their hosts forged ahead on the counter attack in the 23rd minute.

On his team’s performance, forthright Worthington said: “I could not question the honesty and endeavour but I was disappointed by the three goals. They were not good ones to concede.

“The first goal came from our attack when Josh Carson was unable to put the ball in the net. They have then gone up the other end and scored and that summed the game up really.”

Carson was denied a second goal for the Minstermen since his move from Ipswich when Ismail Yakubu’s block prevented his close-range effort finding the net.

Within seconds, the ball had found its way into Michael Ingham’s goal after a swift break saw Conor Washington cross for Zebrowski to open the scoring.

County then doubled their lead in the first minute of added-on time prior to the interval with Minshull curling in from 10 yards after a favourable ricochet off referee Graham Salisbury had helped create the opportunity.

In the second half, Carson and David McGurk both had chances to get the visitors back into the match but it was Newport who completed the scoring with Crow’s goal on 89 minutes.

The former Luton striker tapped in from three yards following Mike Flynn’s firmly-driven free kick.
