Portsmouth 1 York 1: Minstermen face competition for Olejnik’s services

YORK City might be beaten to the signature of goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik this summer after he excelled on his farewell outing for Russ Wilcox’s men.

Olejnik, who was recalled for Michael Ingham, made a string of fine saves to keep Portsmouth at bay before finally being beaten by League Two’s top marksman Matt Tubbs on 83 minutes.

Teenage wing-back Brad Halliday levelled in the next attack but Wilcox agreed that on-loan Peterborough player Olejnik played a big part in the draw that ensured York avoided finishing their season with a third consecutive defeat.

“Bobby made two or three fantastic saves and, whilst he’s had a bit of criticism, I think people saw again at Portsmouth that he’s a top-class goalkeeper,” said Wilcox. “We will have to sit down and see where we go with him in the summer, but I’m sure he will have interest from other parties.”

During an even first half, centre-back Keith Lowe went closest to opening the scoring with a spectacular overhead kick which thudded against the bar.

After the break, Jed Wallace and Adam Webster also hit the frame of the same goal, and Olejnik made superb saves to deny both players, along with their team-mates Conor Chaplin, Ben Close and James Dunne.

Tubbs fired into Olejnik’s bottom right-hand corner from the edge of the box, but Halliday struck back two minutes later, shooting across the face of Paul Jones’s goal after Tom Platt’s shot had been blocked.
