Positive run needed to offset York’s slow start

The Minstermen have won just two of their opening nine games and travel to Torquay today sitting fourth bottom in League Two.

However, an impressive 4-2 victory over former Premier League side Portsmouth in their last outing has boosted confidence levels and Worthington is challenging his players to go on a good run.

The York manager said: “The performance all the way through and the result was excellent. To me, it had been coming and now the challenge is to maintain that week-in and week-out.

“Our objectives from the start of the season have not changed.

“You look to accrue 50 to 51 points as soon as possible and then see where you are in the season. If there is sufficient time then you push on towards the next objective.

“What we need to do now is stick a good run of results together, and we will do that by keeping our level of performances up. We need to find that level of consistency.”

York have taken four points from their last two games, a welcome turn of fortunate after the club had lost four straight league games to slip into the drop zone.

Richard Cresswell will again be missing as the veteran striker sits out the last match of the three-game suspension that followed his red card in the home defeat to Mansfield Town.

Like York, today’s opponents won 4-2 on their last home outing – Cheltenham Town were the visitors to Plainmoor a fortnight ago.

They have also won twice in the league and sit 18th in the table, one point ahead of Worthington’s side.

The York manager added: “The performances have been pretty good but last Saturday everything came together and we got the result we deserved.

“It has been great for confidence and, hopefully, we can do it again this weekend.

“It won’t be easy, as Torquay are a decent side. But we go into the game on the back of two good results so we have something to build on.”

After today, York are not in league action for a fortnight with next week’s game against Scunthorpe being postponed.

Worthington has signed Luke O’Neill, 23, on a month-long loan deal from Burnley.
