Rodman brought in to crack familiar foes

FAMILIARITY breeds contempt, according to the old saying.

So, by the end of Monday night, the chances of York City and AFC Wimbledon being sick of the sight of each other is a distinct possibility.

By then, the two clubs will have met three times in the space of just nine days with today’s League Two encounter sandwiching two FA Cup ties.

For Minstermen manager Gary Mills, the prospect of trailing down to Surrey for a first-round replay – which will be televised live by ESPN on Monday – is a far from endearing one, not least because his side dominated only to concede an equaliser 10 minutes from time.

Ahead of today’s re-match with the Dons, he is calling for the City players to be much more ruthless than was the case a week ago.

Mills said: “I am sure we’ll both be sick of each other by the end of next week’s Cup tie after three games in just over a week but, at the moment, all we want are the three points.

“It was disappointing not to win last Saturday. We got a goal in front and then had a few chances to make the game safe but couldn’t finish them off.

“That allowed Wimbledon to come back and get an equaliser, which means we now have to travel down there next week. That was disappointing but we can’t do anything about that now.

“We need to do the same again, but this time finish it off. We have to take the game to Wimbledon and dominate for long periods.

“The key is remaining patient. Wimbledon came to try and protect what they had. At times, they played 4-6-0 with no-one up front.

“That made it difficult for us to break them down. I can see it being similar again in the league so we have to remain patient and believe in ourselves. If we do that, we can hopefully get the win we didn’t manage last weekend.”

Alex Rodman is in line for his York debut today after joining on loan from Aldershot Town on Thursday.

Mills, who has linked up with the striker for a second time after the pair were together at Tamworth, said: “It is a good move for Alex and a good move for us.

“Things have not worked out lately at Aldershot so this is a chance for him to get going again.”
