YORK City lost their first league away game since September as they went down at Newport.

Home substitute Romone Rose sunk the play-off chasing Minstermen with a 70th-minute goal after Paddy McLaughlin had earlier cancelled out Nat Jarvis’s opening strike.

Newport forged ahead on 33 minutes when Jarvis forced the ball home from close range after York goalkeeper Michael Ingham had failed to deal with Sam Foley’s corner.

The visitors were level six minutes later after Lanre Oyebanjo had been brought down 25 yards from goal. McLaughlin hammered in the free-kick for his 13th goal of the season.

York finished the half strongly with Jamie Reed heading wide and also forcing on-loan Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow into a low save.

After the break, Lee Minshull cleared Ingham’s crossbar from 35 yards before Darlow went close to gifting York the lead, dropping a long throw by Challinor throw.

Right-back David Pipe came to his rescue by blocking Matty Blair’s shot and Newport were back in front on 70 minutes.

Substitute Rose fired into Ingham’s bottom right-hand corner from 15 yards.
