Shrewsbury 1 York 0: Unbeaten run flagged down to Minstermen’s dismay

YORK City manager Russ Wilcox was left seething by the officials after his team were denied a point at promotion-chasing Shrewsbury.

Former Sheffield United striker Shaun Miller saw a late chance flagged offside at the New Meadow with Wilcox stating that match footage confirmed the effort should have stood.

The ‘goal’ would have been just reward for a York side who matched a host team that has only been beaten by Chelsea and Northampton on their own soil this term.

On-loan Coventry forward Miller also fired over in a one-on-one situation, Luke Summerfield hit a post and Russell Penn and Shaq Coulthirst both forced fine saves during a strong second-half display by the Minstermen, who were only playing for pride after securing their Football League status four days earlier.

“We didn’t get the big decision, which always seems to go to teams at the top end rather than those at the bottom,” claimed Wilcox.

“After we viewed it back, it was a tight decision, but Shaun was onside and he will be disappointed to have that ‘goal’ chalked off.

“It’s cost us a point and we should be unbeaten in seven matches, but the performance gives me great hope and bodes well for the future.”

Shrewsbury held on after Mark Ellis headed in the only goal from Bobby Grant’s 13th-minute corner.

Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro might also have scored a flattering second for the Shrews late on but he fired straight at Michael Ingham after charging clear.
