Swansea 3 York City: Minstermen no match for Swansea’s altered line-up

YORK CITY were unable to prevent Swansea City from easing into the third round of the Capital One Cup with victory at the Liberty Stadium.

Manager Garry Monk made 11 changes from the side which drew at Sunderland on Saturday, but Swansea’s second-string still had too much class for their League Two opponents.

Nathan Dyer, who scored twice in the Wembley final against Bradford City when Swansea won the competition in 2013, set them on their way inside two minutes.

England Under-20 international Matt Grimes grabbed his first goal for the club before substitute Marvin Emnes added a third in the closing moments.

Swansea had the perfect start when Wayne Routledge’s delicious through-ball split the York defence. Visiting goalkeeper Scott Flinders was off his line quickly to block at the feet of Antonio Eder, but the ball ran loose to Dyer who made no mistake.

Flinders then pushed aside Routledge’s well-struck curler and Ki Sung-yueng’s deflected drive flew just wide.

A spell of sloppy Swansea passing gave York heart and they almost equalised when Vadaine Oliver forced the debut-making Kristoffer Nordfeldt into an acrobatic save from a corner.

Nordfeldt could then only watch on as James Berrett tried his luck from 20 yards and the ball clattered back off the bar.

Grimes laid a delightful ball into Eder’s path but Flinders foiled the Portugal striker from close range and Eder then shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Swansea’s wastefulness in front of goal continued in the second half when Grimes drove over. Oliver’s effort just cleared the crossbar for York but then Grimes doubled the home side’s advantage after 64 minutes.

Angel Rangel fed Grimes and the former Exeter forward’s shot beat Flinders with the help of a deflection and Emnes lashed home another against a tiring defence two minutes from time.
