Torquay 0 York 3: Worthington plans to polish it up in Trophy

Second-half goals from Wes Fletcher, Josh Carson and Ryan Jarvis saw the Minstermen record back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

But the former Northern Ireland manager wants his players to be sharper than they were during the first half at Plainmoor in tomorrow night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy home encounter with Rotherham United.

He said: “I don’t want to sound too negative because it was a great result and a clean sheet but there are still things we need to tidy up.

“We needlessly gave the ball away in the first half and I was happy to go in 0-0 at the break.”

Torquay shaded the first 45 minutes but only managed to force visiting goalkeeper Michael Ingham into one save during that opening period and he had no problems keeping out former Sheffield United winger Jordan Chapell’s weak effort.

Ingham went on to save a strike from Karl Hawley at his near post moments before the Minstermen broke upfield to open the scoring on 52 minutes.

A cross from recalled midfield player Craig Clay was brilliantly controlled by Fletcher and he then fired a powerful six-yard shot past home goalkeeper Martin Rice.

The Minstermen then doubled their advantage when Carson curled a 67th-minute free-kick in off the crossbar after substitute Ryan Bowman had been fouled by Torquay defender Anthony O’Connor.

Jarvis wrapped up matters six minutes later with his sixth goal of the season.

He pounced from close range after Rice had pushed David McGurk’s header onto his crossbar.
