Wilcox immediately under fire from fans

DEFENSIVE blunders by Keith Lowe and Stephane Zubar saw York City suffer their heaviest opening day defeat for 15 years.

The Minstermen went down 3-0 to last season’s League Two play-off finalists Wycombe – a loss that reminded frustrated away fans of their 4-1 thrashing against Chesterfield at the start of the 2000/01 campaign.

Zubar completed the scoring for the Buckinghamshire hosts in the most bizarre of circumstances, lofting a 20-yard own goal over the head of helpless debutant goalkeeper Scott Flinders just before the half-hour mark.

Earlier, Lowe had attempted to flick a header back to Flinders but home centre-back Anthony Stewart intercepted to open the scoring on seven minutes.

Wanderers striker Aaron Amadi-Holloway then drilled a low 15-yard effort inside Flinders’ left-hand post just before the half-hour mark before Zubar put the seal on a dismal afternoon for Russ Wilcox’s men.

Substitute Jake Hyde managed York’s only on-target attempt in stoppage time when his header was tipped over.

The visitors were booed off at the final whistle after earlier chants of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning” were aimed at Wilcox from the away end.

Wilcox said: “We knew our first port of call was to be solid at a tough place like Wycombe but we gave away two, if not three, soft goals. Other than that, Scott Flinders didn’t have much else to do because they only had three shots on target.”
