Worthington targets wins not draws to pull Minstermen clear of trouble

But, for manager Nigel Worthington, this failure to win – the Minstermen last claimed all three points on October 29, in the 4-1 thrashing of Scunthorpe United – is becoming a major frustration.

He said: “We have been playing well and getting points instead of all three. The plus is we are not getting beaten. But we want to get back to winning ways.”

York’s need for a win is vividly illustrated by the League Two table.

They sit fifth bottom with 22 points from as many outings, one clear of today’s opponents in the final relegation place.

When the current run of seven draws in eight games began, York were 18th in the table and four points clear of trouble – a useful cushion in a division as tight as the basement.

Bury may be occupying the relegation places but Worthington’s side will have to be wary today of forward Daniel Nardiello.

loan last month, has been in fine form since returning to the Shakers.

He has netted four times in his last five appearances for Bury, his most recent strike coming in stoppage time on Boxing Day to rescue a point in the 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe United.

Meanwhile, City have agreed terms with former Peterborough United striker Shaquille McDonald following a successful trial.

The 18-year-old, who is not eligible to play until the New Year’s Day home game with Morecambe, was a prolific goalscorer for Posh’s youth team before being released. He had previously been on trial with Leeds United.

Worthington added: “During a conversation with Barry Fry, Barry recommended this young player to me and told me that he was worth a close look.

“We had him in for a few days in the week prior to Christmas. He showed good pace, touch and awareness.”
