Worthington: We have to focus on our own job

Occupying 16th place after a month that brought 10 points from six games, the Minstermen are six points clear of the drop zone going into today’s trip to promotion-chasing Fleetwood Town.

All, therefore, seems well at Bootham Crescent as the club look to avoid a repeat of last season’s desperate fight for survival at the foot of the Football League.

Scratch a little below the surface, however, and York’s position is not quite so secure thanks to the number of games all the sides below them in the table have in hand.

Some, such as Portsmouth and Mansfield Town, have played just one fewer than York. Others, though, have more in hand with Bury and Northampton Town – two of the bottom three – having played 26 times to York’s 29.

Plenty then for the Minstermen to do as they look to stay clear of trouble.

Manager Nigel Worthington said: “The thing about League Two is that things are tight at the top and the bottom. A couple of wins and a team can shoot up the league and vice-versa.

“We just have to focus on ourselves and make sure we do our own jobs. The rest will take care of itself.”

Today’s assignment is a tough one, with Fleetwood having triumphed 2-0 at Bootham Crescent earlier in the season.

Worthington took advantage of Fleetwood’s game at Scunthorpe United being moved to last Monday to be shown live on television.

He joined assistant manager Steve Torpey at Glanford Park as the then leaders were held to a goalless draw so the Irishman knows York are in for a tough test by the seaside.

York had a quiet end to the transfer window with no activity, either in or out of the club.

Worthington had previously said how happy he was with a month that had brought seven new players into York while an identical number headed through the exit door.

Jon Parkin, who has netted seven times for Fleetwood despite starting just seven games, could feature against his former club along with ex-loanee Charlie Taylor.

But Matty Blair is still on loan at Northampton Town.
