Wrexham 0 York City 3: Minstermen cut loose in style as Wrexham are knocked off perch

A MEMORABLE first-half performance paved the way for York City’s unexpected win over Wrexham, who led the league table before the game.

York’s stunning display was in stark contrast to several recently, the Minstermen having lost to part-timers Alfreton, Telford and Tamworth and being lucky to beat bottom of the table Bath City four days earlier.

Wrexham, with only one defeat this season and having the meanest defence in the league, were simply torn apart in the opening 45 minutes when York could easily have been half-a-dozen goals up by instead of three.

Their quick passing movements had the Wrexham defenders chasing shadows from the moment York took a third-minute lead, Patrick McLaughlin rocketing home a 25-yard free-kick after a well-rehearsed training ground move with Ashley Chambers.

Fine saves by goalkeeper Joslain Meyebi kept York out until the 20th minute when Michael Ingham’s long clearance was headed on by Jason Walker for Chambers to run clear and shoot low past Mayebi.

Three minutes later, it was 3-0 as Chambers’s slide-rule pass saw Jamie Reed turn his marker before cracking home a low cross shot off the inside of Mayebi’s left-hand post.

Wrexham’s only real chance came in the 39th minute when Jake Speight was released on the right and the former Bradford City striker cut in before shooting into the side netting.

York manager Gary Mills said: “Everyone did their job superbly in an exceptional performance. I will be taking my wife a cup of tea in bed tomorrow morning instead of sulking!”
