Wycombe v York City: Safety mark is first priority for York

The Chairboys suffered a devastating end to last season after losing on penalties in the League Two final.

What added further to Wycombe’s misery was they had been ahead going into stoppage time at Wembley before Southend United netted a dramatic last-gasp equaliser.

Wilcox said: “It is hard to say what effect last May will have on Wycombe and if there will be a hangover. They have had all summer to get over it but these things can linger.

“What matters to me is how we play and how we start the season.”

York had a mixed pre-season after performing admirably against a trio of Championship sides only to then round off their warm-up with defeats to non-League duo Harrogate Town and FC Halifax Town.

Wilcox added: “We can’t wait to get going. There were some highs and lows in pre-season. We got ourselves up to face Leeds, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday at home but then weren’t able to do the same when playing a couple of non-league sides away from home.

“The priority when you start is to get to 50 points in this division. Portsmouth might be a bit different with all the expectation surrounding them but I’d wager a guess that most clubs in League Two will want to get there as soon as possible, and then reassess.

“In the last two seasons, two big clubs in Tranmere and Bristol Rovers have gone down so that shows what can happen. We want to improve on last year, of course we do. But the first task is to get to those 50 points and then take it from there.”
