A quality finish in each half from the 39-year-old former Barnsley and Bristol Rovers striker means the Minstermen are searching for their second home win of the season and have dropped into the relegation zone.

Wilcox’s side have managed just one goal in their opening six fixtures of 2015 and he said: “The best and oldest player on the pitch showed what we are lacking at the moment. He was the difference between the two teams at the top end of the pitch, where he had the quality we didn’t.

“He had the composure to make the task of goalscoring look simple and he still looks in fantastic shape at 39.”

Cureton opened the scoring on 19 minutes when he received Billy Bingham’s through ball and curled a low shot beyond Bobby Olejnik after riding Keith Lowe’s attempted tackle.

Cureton added a second eight minutes after the break with a well-measured lob following centre-back Ayo Obileye’s lofted pass over the York defence.

The hosts rarely threatened a response although substitute Jake Hyde’s header was cleared off the line by Bingham on 88 minutes.

Wilcox and his players incurred the wrath of certain sections of the crowd at the final whistle with the Minstermen chief adding: “The supporters went away unhappy and rightly so, but there’s nobody lower than me at this moment in time.”
