A goal in each half from on-loan Charlton striker Michael Smith secured maximum points for Wimbledon, leaving the Minstermen without a win in six matches since their opening-day victory over Northampton.

It is also six hours since Worthington’s team last found the net at Bootham Crescent while goals are being shipped in embarrassing fashion at the other end of the pitch.

The disappointed former Northern Ireland manager said: “The fans come to support their local team and we get fantastic support home and away. It is only right, therefore, that we give a good, honest performance week-in, week-out as part of the repayment for their support, but that wasn’t an honest performance.”

York fell behind just past the half-hour mark when Ashley Chambers lost the ball down the left and a punt upfield saw Smith shrug off captain Chris Smith and on-loan Leicester defender George Taft before lobbing over Michael Ingham from 12 yards.

The 6ft 4ins, 21-year-old then made the points safe on 72 minutes after substitute Chris Arthur had burst past York’s Smith down the right wing.

He went on to find Smith at the far post and he tapped in from two yards to earn the visitors their first away win in nine matches.
