York City 0 Wrexham 0: Point could prove vital, says Mills, as York are foiled by Wrexham

York City had to thank goalkeeper Michael Ingham for their hard-earned point against leaders Wrexham in a well-fought game between two impressive teams.

The biggest crowd of the season at Bootham Crescent – 30 per cent better than average – saw an evenly-balanced contest with chances at both ends, but Ingham was much busier than his opposite number Joslain Mayebi.

He made outstanding saves from Jamie Tolley and Mathias Pogba in the first 20 minutes nefore, best of all, from player-manager Andy Morrell in the 57th minute. Andre Boucaud and Jamal Fyfield also got in crucial tackles when goals seemed imminent.

York, while enjoying an equal share of the territorial action, didn’t manage a shot on target until a minute after the interval when the lively Ashley Chambers made a 40-yard run only to be denied by Mayebi’s fine save. Chambers (62) and Adriano Moke (87) also went close.

Seeking a double after the 3-0 win at Wrexham in September, York never looked likely to repeat that effort, but will be pleased to gain four points out of the six and keep clean sheets on both occasions, particularly against a well-drilled side which looks likely to be involved in the final play-off shake-up based on this latest evidence.

York manager Gary Mills, who reverted to his best side following the much-changed line-up in the FA Cup defeat a week earlier, was happy enough with a point.

“We are still in the top five after an entertaining, high-quality game which I am sure will have sent supporters home happy. Wrexham are a strong side and are top for a good reason. That point could be very important to us at the end of the season.”
