York City 1 AFC Wimbledon 3: We never turned up, bemoans Wilcox

YORK City manager Russ Wilcox will come under increased pressure after this home defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

The result left fourth-bottom York without a win in nine League Two contests and sections of the Bootham Crescent crowd again called for Wilcox’s dismissal.

Wimbledon, who have beaten the Minstermen in their last four meetings, forged ahead on 15 minutes. Scott Flinders initially saved a stretching Ade Azeez’s shot but the ball rebounded back over the line off the visiting striker.

Vadaine Oliver levelled just past the hour with an opportunist 12-yard overhead kick after on-loan Cardiff City goalkeeper Ben Wilson had dropped a high cross from left-back Femi Ilesanmi.

But the hosts went on to make it eight goals conceded in their last three games with, first, ex-Sheffield United striker Lyle Taylor – signed by Wilcox for Scunthorpe 15 months ago – running in behind the sluggish York defence to slot past Flinders.

Ex-Leeds United striker Tom Elliott, on as a second-half substitute, then put the outcome beyond doubt, directing in a diving header after being left unmarked at the near post.

Wilcox admitted: “It was shambolic. We are fighting for our lives at the bottom of the league, but the first half was a non-event.

“We never turned up, didn’t make a tackle and failed to get close to people or pass the ball well. Then, in the second half, we did what we usually do – shot ourselves in the foot by conceding cheap goals. Their second goal was in slow motion and that’s unacceptable.”
