York City 1 Bath 0: Reed volleys home to please Minstermen

SUbstitute Jamie Reed grabbed an 88th-minute winner as York secured a nervy 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Bath.

Reed, who had only been on the pitch for three minutes, volleyed in from close range after a Matty Blair corner to score a vital first goal of the season.

Both teams missed penalties with Jason Walker York’s culprit and Ben Swallow seeing his spot kick saved by home goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

Bath were the better side during the first half with Swallow forcing a low save from Ingham. Lee Phillips’s header also had to be tipped over by Ingham on 18 minutes.

The Minstermen missed a great chance to gon in ahead at the break after a rash challenge on Jon Challinor saw referee Richard Clark point to the spot, only for Walker to fire his spot-kick over.

York started the second half in better fashion with Challinor and Ashley Chambers both calling Bath goalkeeper Glyn Garner into action quickly after the restart.

Walker also fired across the face of goal before Bath suffered their own penalty woe in the 75th minutes.

Ingham rushed out to bring down Swallow 15 yards from goal but the Romans’ midfielder then side-footed his spot-kick weakly for the former Northern Ireland international to get down comfortably to save low to his left.

Reed, though, went on to snatch victory for the Minstermen in dramatic fashion.
