York City 1 Gateshead 2: Battling York fall to Gateshead again

York City received a blow to their promotion play-off hopes as they went down at home to Gateshead despite a strong second-half fightback.

It was only York’s second defeat in 21 league games as Gateshead completed a double over the Minstermen.

Poor marking saw York go 2-0 down and although substitute Jamie Reed pulled a goal back two minutes after coming on, late pressure failed to save York, Tim Deasy making a superb save to deny Reed an equaliser from a free-kick.

York, who fielded the side which beat Stockport on Saturday were behind after two minutes.

The home defence were slow to re-act to Yemi Odubade’s corner and Micky Cummins left Michael Ingham helpless with a shot into the left-hand corner.

York missed a glorious chance on 40 minutes when Ashley Chambers beat the offside strap to run clear but he failed to beat the advancing Deasy.

The visitors went further ahead on 57 minutes when Odubade’s cross to the far post was headed Ingham by the unmarked Cummins.
