Michael Coulson’s 28-yard free-kick into the bottom corner in the 76th minute clinched a 1-0 League Two home win against Newport County, the team they had defeated in the FA Trophy final at Wembley two years ago.

The Minstermen also made it 22 clean sheets for the season ahead of their last day of the regular season trip to title-chasing Scunthorpe United.

Nigel Worthington’s York overcame a nervous opening quarter against the Welshmen before getting on the front foot at Bootham Crescent only to waste a series of chances before the break.

It was left to Coulson to strike the winner after a foul on substitute Ryan Bowman.
