Fletcher’s spot-kick eight minutes from time was just reward for a spirited display from the hosts who had started slowly.

Seeking their first win of the League Two campaign, York came out quickly against newly-promoted Cambridge United.

Michael Coulson’s well-struck drive on just 18 seconds brought a fine save from U’s goalkeeper Chris Dunn, and Keith Lowe saw his crisp effort from just inside the box struck an upright less than a minute later.

But the U’s took the lead on 27 minutes when Tom Elliott rose almost unchallenged to flash a powerful header into the roof of the net.

Worse was to follow when Kwesi Appiah fired home a spot-kick after Lowe was deemed to have impeded Elliott. But Jake Hyde’s close-range effort on 42 minutes following excellent work from Coulson gave York renewed hope. Their efforts were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Fletcher slotted home after he was upended by Tom Bonner.

York City: Mooney (Ingham 46), McCoy, Penn, Ilesanmi, McCombe (Winfield 46), Lowe, Straker, Coulson, Summerfield, Hyde (Fletcher 71), Meikle. Unused substitutes: Parslow, Montrose, Platt, Hirst.
