York City 2 Carlisle 2: Red card again fails to halt the Minstermen

That record was preserved in impressive fashion at home to Carlisle following striker Vadaine Oliver’s 51st-minute dismissal for violent conduct off the ball.

Wilcox’s men were trailing to goals from Tom Miller and Troy Archibald-Henville at the time, but Luke Summerfield went on to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot and, within two minutes, substitute Josh Carson had equalised.

It was a remarkable comeback that left Wilcox purring: “At 2-0 down with a man sent off, 99 out of 100 people in the ground would have believed Carlisle were definitely going to go on and beat us. But the final result showed what character and togetherness we have in this group of players.”

After Reece Thompson had lifted an easy six-yard chance over for York, the visitors took a 26th-minute lead when Miller’s 12-yard shot found Scott Flinders’s bottom corner.

Three minutes before the break, Archibald-Henville netted from a similar distance.

Oliver was then shown the third red card of his career with York revealing that they are unlikely to contest the decision.

Summerfield converted the 72nd-minute penalty he won after a tangle with Angelo Valanta. Carson then prodded in a cross from fellow replacement Emile Sinclair and York might even have gone on to win when Summerfield’s free-kick forced a flying save from Mark Gillespie.
