York City 2 Hayes & Yeading 0: Minstermen left with problems after Gibson and Doig are ruled out

PLAYING against teams in deep relegation trouble can often prove difficult as York City found out in struggling to a narrow victory.

Hayes & Yeading went from part-time to full-time last year, but are second from bottom and playing home games at Woking while their new stadium is built.

Against such opposition, York, who have lost only two of their last 22 league fixtures, might have been expected to canter home but it was never like that as they created few clear openings, not being helped by a poor final pass.

They were also handicapped by losing Ben Gibson (hamstring) and Chris Doig (groin) and both could miss tomorrow’s home match against Tamworth. With Chris Smith suspended and David McGurk injured, York could have central defensive problems.

Fortunately, Scott Kerr was super in the centre of midfield and right-back Lanre Oyebanjo and substitute Danny Parslow did well as centre-backs.

York broke the deadlock after 57 minutes when James Meredith sent Paddy McLaughlin flying down the left and he centred for Oyebanjo to crack home a low shot.

The visitors finished with 10 men when Ben Spence was sent off for his second cautionable offence in the last minute of normal time. Jason Walker, York’s leading scorer, took his total to 17 when he rocketed home a penalty in the third minute of stoppage time after being brought down by Steve Arnold.

York manager Gary Mills said: “We had to be patient as often happens against lowly teams. I take some credit for the first goal because I told Lanre to get himself into the penalty area and he responded with his first goal for the club.”
