York City 2 Southend 3: Individual errors to blame, says York chief

Russell Penn and Dave Winfield both scored their first goals for the Minstermen but they proved consolations on another disappointing afternoon.

Recalled centre-back Winfield had earlier tripped livewire midfielder Jack Payne to concede a 10th-minute penalty that Myles Weston duly dispatched.

Further errors by goalkeeper Michael Ingham and substitute Anthony Straker saw Kevan Hurst and Payne get on the scoresheet as former Hull City chief Phil Brown guided the visitors to a third straight win.

Home manager Nigel Worthington said: “Individual mistakes cost us dearly. You have to limit the opposition to the number of chances they can score goals from, whether you are a goalkeeper or outfield player but we gifted them all of their goals. You cannot afford to do that – it’s as simple as that.”

Penn equalised in first-half stoppage time when he headed past Daniel Bentley from five yards.

But Southend restored their advantage on 52 minutes when Ingham failed to hold on to a low cross and Hurst swept the ball into an unguarded net.

Payne then found Ingham’s bottom right-hand corner from 15 yards after poor play by Straker had allowed David Worrall to escape. Winfield headed in on 85 minutes from Marvin McCoy’s cross but the Shrimpers never looked like conceding again.
