York City 2 Wycombe 0: Worthington delight at York’s best display

YORK City manager Nigel Worthington hailed “the best 45 minutes” of his year-long tenure at Bootham Crescent following this triumph over Wycombe.

Ryan Bowman’s penalty and a fifth goal of the season for Josh Carson before the break earned the hosts a fourth successive win and moved them up to eighth place in the League Two standings – just outside the play-off zone on goal difference.

York then safeguarded all three points during the second half with a strong rearguard display from a defence who have now conceded just one goal in seven matches. The winning margin should also have been greater following a dominant opening period in which Keith Lowe saw a headed effort disallowed and Michael Coulson, Will Hayhurst and Russell Penn all went close.

Impressed Worthington said: “The first 45 minutes was probably as good as I have seen from us. The movement, energy and invention in the team was fantastic.

“You know, at some stage over the course of 90 minutes, the opposition will try and halt you and we had a stiff breeze in our faces during the second half, but we kept a clean sheet and stayed in control for a big three points.”

Bowman opened the scoring on seven minutes after Carson had been clumsily tripped in the box by visiting striker Dean Morgan.

Winger Carson then claimed a goal in first-half stoppage time, cutting inside from the right flank and firing in from 20 yards after Hayhurst released him during a rapid home counter attack.
