York City: Mills glad Ministermen have put first step behind them

GARY MILLS believes York City possibly got caught up in the emotion of Saturday when their return to the Football League after an eight-year absence brought defeat.

But York’s manager has backed his players to bounce back in tonight’s trip to Morecambe.

He said: “The bottom line is we didn’t play our own game and we got dictated to a bit.

“Maybe we got caught up a little in it being our first game back in the Football League so, in that respect, there is a case for saying that it is a good thing all that is now over and we can concentrate on the rest of the season.

“Rome was not built in a day. I wanted us to get some points on the table on the opening day but it was not to be. Now we want to make amends at Morecambe.”

Wycombe Wanderers ensured York’s return to the League ended in a 3-1 reverse at Bootham Crescent after the visitors had taken a three-goal lead.

After a hugely encouraging performance at League One Doncaster Rovers in the Capital One Cup, the loss came as a disappointment to supporters hoping their club can make a big impact in the coming months.

However, Mills said: “Certain things could have been done better by ourselves on Saturday but we can put them right. I certainly didn’t think Wycombe were any better than us as a team.

“There are a few lads who have not played at this level but they will adapt. We will get better and better as the season goes on.

“Don’t forget that we lost two out of three home games last year and ended up getting promoted.”
