York City v Burnley: Attitude of experienced Cresswell is welcome bonus for boss Worthington

NIGEL WORTHINGTON has hailed the influence of York City’s veteran striker Richard Cresswell.

The 35-year-old returned to Bootham Crescent in the summer for a third spell after cutting short his time with Sheffield United.

Cresswell, despite Worthington previously saying he might not play an abundance of 90 minutes across the season, then set up the 90th-minute strike by Ryan Jarvis that settled the opening day clash with Northampton Town.

Worthington said: “Cressy’s career shows he has been at the top. He has been there, seen it and done it. An absolutely top professional. He came in here for a month at the end of last season and was massive for us – not only on the pitch but also in the dressing room.

“To have someone about like that with all that experience of higher leagues can be huge. We have a number of young strikers who have come into the club since then and Cressy’s value around the place has been huge.

“He is as good as gold as a person too. Not just the playing side with Richard, the all-round package.”

Cresswell still had a little under a year remaining on his Bramall Lane contract when York came calling in the summer.

Worthington added: “His decision to depart from Sheffield United and come here speaks volumes for the lad. From that point of view, yes, it would have been very easy to sit there for the next 12 months and earn, I suppose, a very, very good wage. Keep his nose clean, do what the manager asks and that would be that.

“But he has more about him. He wants to be involved. Cressy realises he is at an age when he might not start all the games. But he will be a massive lift to the dressing room.”
