York City v Exeter: Minstermen striker light as goals hard to find

Concerns over who is going to put the ball in the back of the net seem almost trivial when measured against the threat of relegation that hung over York City for much of the season.

But if the Minstermen are to continue the forward momentum that has seen them storm away from the bottom two in the past couple of months, then finding a goalscorer will be vital.

It does not appear to be getting any easier for manager Nigel Worthington, though, with top scorer Wes Fletcher a doubt for today’s visit of Exeter and fellow frontman Ryan Jarvis still not deemed match fit.

It all adds up to increasing odds against York ending a club-record sequence of four home games without a goal today.

“The last two performances at home, Cheltenham and Southend, have been very, very good. The only thing that’s been missing is the goals,” observed Worthington.

“We are aware of that, we are working on it and it is more of the same and just trying to get the cherry on the cake with the goal or goals to get the three points.

“They are working and training very well. There is a brightness and a spark in them and that has to be important over the next 13 games.

“We must keep looking forward, keep pushing – without putting too much pressure on the players because you want them to relax and go and perform.

“The last two performances at home, for me, have been very solid. There has been a lot of good stuff there and it is just about that final little bit of trying to get over the line.”

Exeter arrive at Bootham Crescent just a point below the 12th-placed Minstermen but in a cluttered mid-table they are four places behind their hosts.

That logjam in the bottom half emphasises the need for York to end their goal drought.

Worthington said: “They are a very good footballing side and they want to pass that ball. They have had a few disappointments in recent games results-wise. We have watched them and they are decent – make no mistake about that.

“As always, if we do our own job properly and thoroughly and go and put on the field some of the training we do then, hopefully, come ten to five on Saturday afternoon, we won’t be far away.”
