York City v Hartlepool: Wilcox demands more of the same

The Minstermen knocked out Cup specialists Bradford City in midweek to earn a second round trip to Premier League side Swansea City.

After a slow start that seemed to be a hangover from the opening day defeat at Wycombe Wanderers, York ripped into Bradford and were unfortunate not to win the tie in normal time.

In the end, penalties were needed to separate the two Yorkshire rivals but Wilcox believes his side were worthy winners.

He said: “We set a standard with how we played. Midfield was awesome, the back three were great second half and we stretched Bradford.

“It was just a great performance. And how we responded to what was a massive body blow in conceding with 15 seconds to go was great. It was about character then and that showed me we have great character in this team.

“We have to use that night as a catalyst to move forward. I must admit that having puit 120 minutes into the lads, another big home game so quickly is tough.

“Hartlepool won at Fleetwood as well. So, they will be confident going into the game.”

York gave everything over two hours of captivating football to leave Wilcox slightly concerned as to how much the Bradford win will have taken out of his players.

Luke Summerfield is a doubt after injuring his leg in the foul that led to the MInstermen’s second goal but the midfielder may not have to be the only change from a line-up that has been the same for both the opening fixtures.

Wilcox added: “We will find out against Hartlepool what it has taken out of us. Leg-wise, it will be a concern. Do you put out the same team or make changes?

“It could be a big ask. I have been looking at the boys this week and making my mind up. You also have to factor in the long journey last weekend.

“I would find it great to play the same XI because they did so well. It is almost like their reward. But I will have to see how they are.”

Vadaine Oliver is also a doubt after being forced out of the action on Tuesday early in extra-time with a shoulder problem.
