York City v Oxford: Wilcox is certain Minstermen are moving forward

WHAT difference does a year make? Nothing for York City, at least in terms of bare statistics.

As the Minstermen prepare to host Oxford United tonight in the 10th game of the League Two season, the club’s record is identical to 12 months ago.

Played nine, a points tally of nine and a goal difference of minus two. Even York’s position of 19th in the table is the same.

Not much, therefore, seems to have changed. Manager Russ Wilcox, however, begs to differ.

“I think progress has been made,” said Wilcox, who this time last year was still three weeks away from taking charge at Bootham Crescent.

“Strides have been made on and off the pitch. It is a stronger squad when everyone is available and I have confidence in this group.

“Investment has also been made in more staff to help the first team.

“Of course, we would all like more points and the only way to do that is by getting results – starting with Oxford.”

A year ago, Oxford were below York in the table. Third bottom with just seven points from those opening nine games, the U’s seemed to be suffering a hangover from being pipped to a play-off place by the Minstermen a few months earlier.

Eventually, Oxford rallied to finish 13th and this time around there is clearly a determination to improve on that mid-table standing.

Kemar Roofe arrived from West Bromwich Albion in the summer on a three-year contract after a successful loan spell and has rewarded the club’s investment with four goals already this term.

Wilcox added: “As with our opponents on Saturday (Notts County), there has been investment with Roofe and a few others coming in. But we are at home and will try to take the game to them.

“Oxford are not unbeatable, no team in League Two is. Our performances at home have been better than our results maybe suggest.

“Ironically, our worst display was the one we won against Yeovil – though I’d take a repeat against Oxford.”

Tom Platt has been recalled from his loan spell at Harrogate Town due to Luke Summerfield being out.
