York City v Rochdale: Worthington looks to include extra striker

JUST four wins at Bootham Crescent since returning to the Football League has been a major contribution to York City sitting in a precarious position just above the relegation zone.

However, with a new start tonight courtesy of Nigel Worthington’s first home game in charge, the hope has to be that a change of fortune is around the corner for a club who spent eight years in the Conference before last May’s play-off final triumph.

Certainly, the former Northern Ireland international believes his new charges have what it takes to get out of trouble.

He said: “There were positives to take from Saturday (York lost 3-2 at AFC Wimbledon). I thought they showed good character to twice come from behind and they also showed the right attitude.

“It was also pleasing that they lasted 90 minutes and the key now is to build on those positives to make sure we add what we need the most, a clean sheet and a win.

“There is definitely talent in the squad and there is a great spirit among the lads.”

York, hoping to make it lucky 13 tonight as they go in chase of a first win since the opening week of 2013, could be boosted by the return of full-back Lanre Oyebanjo from a calf injury as Worthington contemplates a tweak to the system preferred by predecessor Gary Mills.

He said: “It will be great to play at home and, hopefully, there will be a good crowd turning out.

“We will maybe tweak things from Saturday due to us being at home.

“We have to go for it in a controlled manner and with that in mind will be looking to get an extra striker in there.”
