York City v Stevenage: Wilcox targets first double of Minstermen’s season

Four points and four places separate the Minstermen from Tranmere Rovers in 23rd place.

It is a decent turnaround for a club who, not so long ago, were in the bottom two and struggling for form so badly that the opening 17 games of the season yielded just one win.

That came at Stevenage in early September and it took the arrival of Russ Wilcox the following month for City to rediscover the winning habit.

Since then, the Minstermen have lost just three of 12 league games and claimed 17 points – hence why they host Stevenage today sitting in a much-improved position.

“There can be no let-up,” said Wilcox, whose side lost 1-0 in their last outing at Wycombe.

“I was looking at the form table over the last eight games this week and we were eighth. But we have to try and keep that form going.

“We all know January is a difficult month and Stevenage are in good form at the moment. So, we will have to be at our best.”

York ended a near seven-month wait for a home win on Boxing Day and Wilcox believes that has banished any anxiety among the squad.

He added: “Everything went with that win. We backed the win over Accrington on Boxing Day with an outstanding display with 10 men for 70 minutes against Plymouth.

“The fans have been lifted, too. They have been great since I came in but in the last two home games I have really detected them getting behind the team,” said Wilcox.

“They never stopped singing in either game.”
