York settle for point as Tamworth hold out

A non-stop second-half attack failed to break the deadlock as York City had to be content with a point against a hard-working Tamworth team.

It was a blow to York’s hopes of a play-off place but the Minstermen could not be faulted for effort, laying siege to the visitors’ goal without creating many clear chances although goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge made two great late saves to deny Lanre Oyebanjo and Scott Kerr.

A very poor first half saw neither goalkeeper troubled, with Jason Walker being just too late to connect with a cross from Ashley Chambers.

A quickly-taken free-kick by Walker saw Matty Blair run 30 yards only to see his cross shot deflected for a corner.

The visitors might have had a penalty when James Meredith appeared to trip Connor Taylor following a mistake by Oyebanjo, but no decision was forthcoming.

York lost leading scorer Walker with a leg injury and his replacement Matt Blinkhorn then headed wide from Oyebanjo’s cross.

York were completely on top after the interval with Jon Challinor heading inches over the bar while Blinkhorn was also wide with another header. Danny Pilkington provided two pin-point crosses which saw Danny Parslow head wide, as did Blinkhorn.

York hammered away and Hedge made two great saves to keep out efforts from Oyebanjo and Kerr in added time. York goalkeeper Michael Ingham did not have a shot to save throughout the whole 90 minutes.
