York told to forget Cup disappointment and put emphasis on league double

GARY MILLS has called on his York City players to forget all about the FA Cup and focus fully on their push for the play-offs.

The Minstermen are still frustrated at letting a winning position slip on Saturday against AFC Wimbledon in the first round – especially as it means they must travel south a week tonight for the replay.

Before then, however, York face back-to-back League Two outings at home to Northampton Town and Wimbledon.

Mills said: “We have been on a decent run in the league and are unbeaten in five games. Hence why we are within touching distance of the play-offs.

“We need to keep the pressure on those above us and we have two games now to do just that. I have told the players to forget all about the FA Cup and focus on the league this week.

“We are all still disappointed that our name is not in the second-round draw outright already but we can make amends for that next week in the replay. For now, we have to focus on Northampton and the big challenge they will provide.”

York sit three places and two points adrift of Torquay United in the final play-off place. Mills added: “We want to push on. Good teams are consistent and we have managed a bit of consistency of late. The key is maintaining that, starting with these two league games.”

Jonathan Smith has joined Luton Town on loan until January after finding first-team opportunities hard to come by in the past two months.

Mills added: “Luton came in so I put the opportunity to him. He fancied playing some games so he has joined Luton.”

Last six games: York City LDWWDD, Northampton Town WWLLWD.

Last time: York City 1 Northampton Town 0; August 16, 2003; Division Three.
