York v Morecambe: Wilcox wants Minstermen to take their first opportunity to confirm their safety

EVEN with the recent back-to-back wins at Bootham Crescent that have made survival tantalisingly close, York City still have the joint second-lowest tally of home wins in the Football league.

The Minstermen have claimed all three points on their own patch just four times in 21 attempts this term, a tally only Wigan Athletic – without a win at the DW Stadium since August – cannot better.

Thanks largely to their away form, York are just one triumph away from safety and manager Russ Wilcox is looking for that to come tonight against Morecambe.

“I don’t think the home performances have been that bad,” said Wilcox, who is determined to wait until York’s League status is assured before sitting down with the club’s out-of-contract players.

“We had a poor day against Dagenham & Redbridge (when losing 2-0 on February 7) but, apart from that, we have been in every game and drawn a hell of a lot.

“By drawing those matches, it shows we haven’t been far away. Of course, we would love to have more wins at home, but it is small margins in this division.

“I watch DVDs of games and the vast majority of games could have seen either team win or lose.

“There are a couple of teams at the top who have a bit more quality and have been consistent.

“But, take those out, and the squads are pretty even.”
